You've got the power to tell when someone is lying, feeling defensive, or checked out. Use it.

Have you ever talked to someone who is telling you a grand story, but you get the feeling that what he or she is saying isn't true? How about the times when you are speaking to someone and all of a sudden you sense that something isn't quite right? By learning some of the different nuances of body language and what they may mean, you too can become a better communicator and understand others better.

Most of us are already aware of the ways we can communicate and understand positive body language. Things like good posture, eye contact, a smile, and a firm handshake, but how about the body language that conveys something negative? Below are some of the more negative body language cues that are important to pick up on.

When someone is lying

How valuable would it be to be able to read someone's body language to determine if they are lying? Lying is definitely something to catch before you are taken to the cleaners or make a really bad decision. Here are some things you might observe when someone is lying:

  • You may see their face flush or they may get rosy blotches on their cheeks and neck
  • The pitch of their voice may change or you might hear a few incoherent words as they are speaking
  • Watch their eyes--you may see their pupils constrict, rapid eye movement, or they may be trying to avoid as much eye contact with you as possible
  • You might observe nervous body gestures that seem out of place
  • Look for an increase in breathing rate or running out of breath at the end of sentences
  • Sometimes when someone is lying, their perspiration increases as observed through a sweaty brow, upper lip, and sweaty armpits
  • You might even observe that their hands or fingers cover their mouth periodically as they spew their lies
  • When someone is having a rough day and/or feeling defensive

When someone is having a bad day or feeling defensive about something at work, they usually try to work through it and pretend like everything is okay but their body language is screaming a different story. Look for such things as:

  • A co-worker who keeps turning their back on you
  • Very minimal eye contact
  • Very minimal facial expressions as they try valiantly to pretend as if nothing is wrong
  • Their hand and arm gestures are closer to their body
  • Their arms may be crossed in front of their body
  • When someone checks out

Most of us have been there--that really long meeting where people begin to fade and quit asking questions because they fear it will extend the meeting further. When you are speaking to someone who has had enough and has tuned you out, you will probably observe the following:

  • You will observe glazed-over eyes staring back at you, or eyes staring at anything else but you
  • They will begin to slump their shoulders and possibly even slide down in their chairs
  • They may begin to write notes or draw pictures
  • They're busy picking those tiny pieces of lint off their jacket
