We just returned from a 20 Group meeting and it was the most invigorating workshop we have ever attended. We completed an assessment of our dealership operations and identified major sales and profit opportunities in all departments. We have benefited from the extensive experience of our facilitator and fellow members. We had the opportunity to compare our operation to other…

For the last sixteen months I have had the incredible experience of being a lead instructor with the NCM Institute. I have had the opportunity to work with hundreds of dealership managers in our multi-level classes for general managers, general sales managers, used vehicle managers, service managers, financial managers, and some private dealership training, as…

You keep hearing that dealers are making good profits in Buy Here Pay Here. You have decided that you would like to pursue the business. What is your next step? After all you may have been in the car business for years. You understand buying and selling cars. You know how to run a compliant Finance Department and a profitable shop. Isn’t BHPH or LHPH just other ways of financing cars?
The answer is not as simple as it might seem. A BHPH or LHPH operation takes…

This article was written by NCMi Instructor, Steve Hall.
Being an instructor at the NCM Institute has some definite advantages. I am blessed with an abundance of information, from all levels of the dealership. Week by week, we get to interact with owners, general managers and department managers. Not only do we share our information and best practices, but listen and learn about what is going on in your…

Do you enjoy what you do each work day? Maybe I’m a little “off,” but I enjoy the craziness of a very busy day. You know—the days where so many folks are on the lot it reminds you of a county fair. Everybody’s phones are ringing almost nonstop. There is a line at the payment window. Inside your showroom, the employees and… |

Back when I first started desking deals, the “seasoned” salespeople would tell me, “Let’s do this deal; we’ll make up the gross on the next one. It’s easier to get iron than customers.” I believe there was a change in that attitude in 2008. Four years later, Buy-Here-Pay-Here (BHPH) dealers are still facing the challenge of finding enough choice inventory for their business model while maintaining portfolio performance.
In my last BHPH operation we operated a little different than…

I have the honor and privilege of traveling this great country of ours and working with all types of BHPH dealers on a consulting, training, and 20 Group basis. I am a firm believer that we learn more from our mistakes than our successes. When I first started to put this article together, I made a list of the most prominent mistakes I see BHPH dealers make. Problem was, the list was about 1,001 mistakes long. Most if not all of which I had made as a dealer myself.
After looking over…

Part of our marketing is to monitor help wanted ads for sales people. I've seen some that should be very effective, but far too many are less than acceptable. The only way to describe them is pure laziness. The only other possibility is that the dealer is still running the sales department on "The Warm Body Theory." That's where dealers who are stuck in the 1980's still believe that if they keep hiring warm bodies, eventually they'll end up with some "natural" sales talent.…

That first day at the beach was always exciting. It was a TOO day. Too much food. Too much water. And way too much sun. It often made the second day at the beach a depressing stay in the house day. Everyone new you were burnt and would try to slap you on the back or grab your arm to watch you cringe. Yet, we did it every year because we knew the effects would only be temporary. In a couple of days the burn turned to a tan and then by vacation's end, you began to peel. It was as if…

Flying is a part of the job. Even dealers have to fly to auctions, meetings, conventions, etc. Over the last 17 years I have noticed a remarkable lack of courtesy, kindness and even basic service toward passengers. What kind of training are the employees receiving? More importantly, what type of leadership by management are they seeing?
I had the pleasure to need to book two trips on a major (U.S.) Air line. My daughter was taking a trip that took her from…

I had a GM and an Internet Director from a Dealer Group in Kansas fly out to meet with my at my office for some "pre training"... I also had the President of Peruzzi Toyota at my office. It turned into an awesome "Synergy Session".
Listen to what the President of Peruzzi Toyota has to say about incremental business and I love they way he breaks down the numbers from Internet…

The NCMi faculty members and the NCM Retail Operations field consultants have learned that managers who effectively manage the elements of “controllable profitability” within their respective operating departments normally produce a significant departmental net profit. This, of course, assumes that the majority of dealership expenses (limited-control and fixed) are fairly distributed to each operating department.
Many managers, however, lack the proper focus on controllable…
