Industry practices are forever changing. At times it seems overwhelming and difficult to keep pace. Just about the time a standard is established someone gets a better idea and everything changes. And that is a good thing. Computers and the internet are two areas that come to mind that have dramatically changed the way dealers do business today. To keep pace with what is happening in the industry subscribing to industry trade magazines and social networking should be at the top of the list. The magazines contain articles written by gurus, advertisements for new products and services and generally tell what is happening out there in Dealerland. And social marketing keeps one in contact with others in the industry.

The gurus go into the depths of the various departments and explain why “it” is done that way or why “it” should not be done that way. Many gurus travel the country and are continually in and out of dealerships. As gurus travel from dealership to dealership peddling their wares they have an opportunity to see “other ways of doing business” and may incorporate what they have seen into their program.

Caution

Do not be mesmerized by what is written most is good stuff; however, judgment should always be exercised. Some advice may be questionable and should never be accepted as gospel and some advice may not be a fit for your store. How business is transacted in Alabama may not work in Idaho; however,” it” will give a better understanding why “it” is done that way. There are times when a thought or tip makes sense and you may want to implement. It is always good to listen to or read what others have to say. Nobody knows it all; something new can be learned every day.

There are many magazines and websites dedicated to the auto dealer. Two magazines that come to mind are Dealer Magazine and Wards Auto Dealer Business. And dealerElite would be a good start for social networking. Subscribing and reading articles written and blogs by the gurus will open ones eyes and give greater meaning to debit left, credit right.
