Many people do not realize the important role that salespeople have played in America.
A salesman discovered America. Christopher Columbus was an Italian in Spain with only one prospect to call on. If he missed the sale, he would have to swim home. Once aboard ship, he really had to "sell" in order to sail. He kept saying to the sailors who had become weary and with mutiny on their minds, "It's just around the corner or over the horizon, let's sail one more day!" Then that one day came with an excited call from the lookout, "Land ho!" and the most profitable sales call in history came to a close.
A salesman established America. George Washington had to persuade the Colonists to leave their homes, farms, businesses, shipbuilding activities and fur trapping to go to war against the most powerful nation on earth. His sales pitch was a tough one. If they won their was no financial gain but they would be free of the English tyranny. If they lost, they would be hung as traitors.
A salesman freed Americans of all race and creed. Abraham Lincoln was known as the great emancipator. Despite unpopular views and opinions, he stood and proclaimed that America was the land of the free for all people. This stand brought a nation into civil war and many lost their lives, but their lives were not in vain for the price of freedom is not free. Americans today enjoy great civil liberties and freedoms because of one man's proclamation coupled with the blood and sweat of those men willing to making the ultimate sacrifice.
A salesman gave Americans a dream of progress. Martin Luther King Jr. delivered a speech that became a pivotal turning point in U.S. history. His thoughts and opinions were not popular and were considered not acceptable at the time. He stepped on to that podium and shared his dream…the American Dream, which is now carried on by citizens and future citizens of The United States of America.
It might just take the American Sales Force to usher this great nation out of our financial and social woes. Each one of us is just a single voice, but together we are a deafening crowd screaming for change. Find your soap box, stand up and be heard and flex your political power and get involved. Freedom of speech is your right!

Comment by Stephanie Young on September 11, 2012 at 2:37pm Thanks, Victor. Amazing comment to my post. Spot on, my sales brother!!!! I might have to get a bigger soap box to accommodate all the "sales believers"!!!! Salespeople really are the backbone and the foundation to our largely global economy.
Comment by Victor E Berkey on September 11, 2012 at 2:22pm Great Stephanie!!! We all must remember, nothing happens in our economy until SOMETHING IS SOLD!!! Until a good or service is sold, nothing happens in our economy. Nobody can even get the government services they are entitled to until something is sold. Taxes aren't collected until something is sold. Ideas and services can't work until someone sells them. Factories do not function without someone selling the product. Without salespeople, no one get's a paycheck in this country. Don't believe me? Check it out for yourself. Look at all aspects of the world wide economy and you will find that it is ALL started with a sale. Whether it's an idea for lending money to manufacturing to providing a service. So let's put this on our back and save our country and our economy.....Sell Something.....Great Post Stephanie!!!

Comment by Marsh Buice on September 11, 2012 at 12:21pm Stephanie, great inspirtation my friend!! We should never, ever underestimate the power we have as salespeople. It is a very misunderstood profession except to those of us who live it every day. A fraternity of sorts...we just get it...we get each other. We have the freedom to make as much or as little as we ACT upon...we have the choice to change people's lives for the better or stand on the sidelines and watch life pass us by. WE have complete control over our lives...drive the bus, dont let others do it for you. Chose to Move!! A better us is a better nation...Love it my friend. So glad you are back.
Comment by Joe Clementi on September 11, 2012 at 11:00am @Stephanie, thanks for writing an inspirational message that is laced with facts! Salespeople were fundamental in building this great economy. We kept it alive during the great depression and moved it forward in every economic downturn. Thank you for pointing out the obvious in your unique and amazing style! Kudo's again!!
