My personal experience is that the timing of WHEN you ask a question and the tone of HOW you state that question are very important in the sales process. Your concept of not asking questions that either encourage the customer to lie, or result in an undesirable answer makes a lot of sense to me.

Here are my four:
1) Treat the customer with dignity and respect.
2) Let them know that you have their best interests at heart. "We want you to get a fair deal."
3) Become their "friend in the car business."
4) Always be honest.
