It is best to review the benefits of this acquistion through the eyes of LinkedIn.  Here's Jeff Weiner, CEO of LinkedIn Pulse Article today offering up his (LinkedIn) thoughts: https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/linkedin-microsoft-changing-way-worl....  It's a great read!

When one appreciates the vision and mission of LinkedIn, one can appreciate both the synergy and independence of this new marriage.

When it comes to professional growth, professional connections, professional Personal Brand Branding, LinkedIn is for you.  When I first joined LinkedIn I feared getting my first connection!  Thousands upon thousands of connections later I marvel at the value LinkedIn has become for me, our brand and why it matters.  If you want your Personal Brand's value to grow, LinkedIn offers the best of all paths along your journey.  I expect LinkedIn to only get better for each of us!

The timing is right for giants to purchase the SM in the next few years, who knows where it will go. I don't think Twitter is a viable purchase for Google, platform is too different. As far as Twitter is concerned Jeff Weiner assured me that they have a strong say so it what happens with LinkedIn and will still be innovating as they have. The impact for LinkedIn will be minor as far as businesses back-end's  are concerned, within the internal structure could be a larger scale change (my opinion) but I think or SM purchases could make an significant impact depending on culture.
