BLACK BOOK SEES OVERALL VEHICLE VALUES INCREASE RESULTING FROM STRONG APRIL AND SPRING SEASON

According to Black Book® data, the average price of a used vehicle for model years 2011-2015 increased in value by 0.4% in April. Cars overall saw an increase in value by 0.7% versus trucks, which saw a 0.3% increase. All vehicles are averaging a 12-month depreciation change of –16.9% entering May.

In April, Sporty Cars performed the strongest, increasing their value by 1.8%. Vehicles in the Sporty Car category include the Dodge Challenger, Chevrolet Camaro, Ford Mustang, BMW 1-Series, and the Mazda MX-5 Miata. Vehicles in this segment finished April with an average price of $13,355.

Only six vehicle segments depreciated in value in April, Premium Sporty Cars, Compact Vans, Full-Size Luxury CUV/SUV, Full-Size Vans, Sub-Compact Crossovers and Sub-Compact Luxury CUVs. Of those vehicle categories, the Full-Size Luxury CUV/SUV segment saw the most depreciation declining in value by -0.5%. Vehicles in this segment include the Audi Q7, Infiniti QX56, Land Rover Range Rover, Cadillac Escalade, Mercedes-Benz GL Class, and the Lincoln Navigator. The Full-Size Luxury CUV/SUV began the month of May with an average segment price of $33,158, a -18.6% drop from year-ago levels ($40,733).

"Clearly we’ve had a stronger-than-expected spring this year, particularly in comparison to the last few spring seasons,” said Anil Goyal, Senior Vice President of Automotive Valuation and Analytics. "We attribute much of this year’s strength to smaller car values which have experienced significant depreciation in the last few years and are most likely viewed as a bargain to many buyers right now.”
