You might know him best as one of the staple sharks on "The Shark Tank," but Mark Cuban didn't get where he is by luck and good looks alone.

He's open about his early struggles, happy to have hit rock bottom in his career which forced him to learn, grow and come back stronger than ever. Like many successful entrepreneurs and businessmen, Cuban is also generously dishing out advice to those who want to listen. If you don't learn from the greats, you're destined to replicate their mistakes when that's not necessary.

Cuban has provided plenty of tips and tricks during his career, but 10 stand out as the cream of the crop. No matter where you are in your startup or business, it's always possible to do more (better). Here are Cuban's top 10 jewels of advice worth digesting. It might just make the difference between you becoming the next shark or floundering like a guppy.

1. On being rich

"Being rich is a good thing. Not just in the obvious sense of benefitting you and your family, but in the broader sense. Profits are not a zero sum game. The more you make, the more of a financial impact you can have." It's not just about the money, but what you do with it that matters.

2. On customer service

"It is so much easier to be nice, to be respectful, to put yourself in your customers' shoes and try to understand how you might help them before they ask for help, than it is to try to mend a broken customer relationship." In other words, treat your customers right and remember that prevention trumps cure.

3. On competition

"I love to compete. To me, business is the ultimate sport. It's always on. There is always someone trying to beat me." Just play fair, and keep your enemies by your side.

4. On (lack of) modesty

"I don't care what anyone says. Being rich is a good thing." There's nothing wrong with wanting to make a profit, enjoying your riches or not being the humblest person in the room.

5. On gut instincts

"What I've learned in these 11 years is you just got to stay focused and believe in yourself and trust your own ability and judgment." Second guessing yourself or ignoring your instincts is the worst thing you can do, both in business and your personal life.

6. On passion projects

"Sweat equity is the most valuable equity there is. Know your business and industry better than anyone else in the world. Love what you do or don't do it." It doesn't matter if home automation is where the money is right now if you don't care about it and have no experience in it. Follow what you know and love.

7. ABS (always be selling)

"I still work hard to know my business. I'm continuously looking for ways to improve all my companies, and I'm always selling. Always." Cuban is no stranger in going door to door. Without sales, nothing matters.

8. On having the right team

"The key is having great players. But there are a lot of teams that have All-Stars and haven't been able to put it together." Hire smart, but don't expect miracles. Your business is built from the people up.

9. On embracing recessions

"Recessions are the best time to start a company. Companies fail. Others hold back capital. If you are willing to do the preparation and work, it is the best time to invest in yourself and start a business." Don't be afraid of challenges and weak economies; work it in your favor.

10. On commitment

"What I've learned is that if you really want to be successful at something, you'll find that you put the time in. You won't just ask somebody if it's a good idea, you'll go figure out if it's a good idea." There are a lot of dreamers in the world. However, without action, that's where they'll stay.
