Hello everyone I am new to this site and this is my first post and I dont want to be to demanding but im kinda struggling in the car business. See when i first started I went on a boom car after car after car, now I know that most of you sell 20 plus cars a month and here in the small town of Twin Falls (44000 people not including surrounding areas) a good month is 8-12 cars. Now at first i was doing about 8-12 and the national average is 8, since the first im doing only 4-6 cars a month and making barely any money. My prospecting is very weak and im not to knowledgeable at prospecting  so i was wondering if anyone could help me with any advice on prospecting tips or advice, where to go what to do or use on line prospecting social networking. Anything helps i am determined to be a 20 car salesman and help my team be #1 in Twin Falls Idaho.

Create affiliations. Go to a local, restaurant, car wash, dry cleaner etc and offer to help build their business for FREE on their worst days of the week. Offer to create a coupon with a value offer of their choosing for their worst business day of the week. You will create and print the coupons that will be handed out to guests at your dealership service, receptionist, service, F&I. You will be providing them business for free. Always think to help someone else first and they will help you. In turn ask if you can create a value offer for you and put it into a coupon form that they give to every customer. At a restaurant they give a check and your coupon. They are now rewarding their customers on top of getting new customers. Get approval to give the business coupons at at your dealership and get approval for the offer. You can do this with several businesses.

Approach an insurance agent about them giving free insurance estimates and coverage reviews for your customers. Send them business so you can get business from them. Be their go to person for any of their customers buying cars.

Create a reward program for local body shops to send customers to you.

Look for every nice trade in that comes in and call your database or at least 20 orphan owners in your dealerships database and let them in on a secret. The secret is that your dealership has taken in a really nice vehicle (describe) and it is not through the shop yet and you are calling a few preferred customers to let them know about this vehicle before it is on the lot. Ask who of their friends, relatives, neighbors or co-workers would be the most likely person want a nice vehicle like that int he next 6 months.

If your state is a closed on Sunday state. I would advise you to hang out at the dealership on Sunday and wash your car. When people are on the lot approach them and let them know you are closed but you are there washing your car and you would be happy to answer any questions they may have but you cant sell them on Sundays. Give your card and be of assistance.

Email me and I will give you more ideas. mtewart@tewart.com

Anyone reading this forum feel free to use all the ideas. What I give I get back ten fold.

Best Wishes and Good Selling,

Tyler - you've got some of the best in the business reaching out to you.  This will give you a HUGE advantage in your pursuit to get better. I know that all of the great sales pros on here will point you in the right direction.  If I can give you one piece of advice it would be to become a student of this profession.  Most dealership training lasts about a week, if you're lucky.  You need to read everything you can on selling.  Start with Fran's book and move on to Brian Tracy, Zig Zeigler and Joe Girard.  You can get these books on CD and listen to them in your car.  Once you get a good foundation, you can start getting specialized training on how to plan your day and work you plan.  I've never met a sales pro who didn't come to work with a clear plan of what they needed to accomplish every day to keep themselves successful.  Good luck and happy selling!

Tyler,

You're getting lots of good advice. This is not an easy job, if it was, people would be lining up to do it. I've worked at dealerships for over 30 years and seen lots of people get discouraged. I chose to sell cars after 18 years in the service areas. That gave me a huge bank of customers that knew and trusted me, allowing a huge headstart to sell cars.

I'm going to assume you're a nice guy, by asking for guidance you're showing that you want to succeed and are committed. Stay positive, keep a good work ethic and only listen to successful people in any field.

My advice for prospecting is to look at what you did when you started. When people start a new job, they tend to think outside of the box and strangely enough, are somewhat fearless. You have a decent group of people that you've sold cars to. Not everyone hits the ground running. You need some patience and ongoing training.

If you treated those people right, they will be you greatest allies in recruiting new customers. Feel free to ask your current customers for referrals. They will surprise you with prospects. Then just keep up the good work. The friends and family referrals are not always the best. You've probably exhausted any you may have gotten by now.

Resist discouragement at all costs. Hopefully this advice helps.

Best of luck to you and hopefully I can ask you for advice one day.

Tyler,

Selling is a numbers game, the more people you put yourself in front of the better off you will be.  Find a way to log 100 people per month in your CRM.  If you're working 25 days per month you'll need to average 4 people per day.  Where are you going to find these people you ask?  I'll give you a few suggestions.

1. Post five cars per day on Craigslist.  Incorporate video when doing so.

2. Call service customers one day before their service appointment.  Go to my website and check out Ninja Tools and then go to phone scripts.  You'll want to check out the "Converting Service Customers To New Prospects" script.

3. You will also notice there's a script for prospecting and asking for referrals, use them religiously.  There is also an abundance of training videos on my YouTube channel (thephoneninja).

When you come to work your goal should be to sell a car every day.  In order to achieve a goal you must have objectives and tactics. A good objective would be to schedule 3 appointments per day.  A good tactic would be to make X number of phone calls to achieve your objective.  Now it's your turn:  Give me three good objectives and tactics you'll employ to make it happen!

You can also jump on this telephone seminar I am hosting next week.  There will be 8 other industry experts sharing their wisdom.  http://cardealersforacause.com/asc/

This is such a powerful thread and dealerELITE members are so cool!  Good luck  Tyler!
