<p><br/>Yet all too often in this industry, we leave to chance the success or failure of our business and our people, which truly are one and the same. Neither can exist without the other. Why is it though that we treat our people with such disdain? I have often heard the argument that “we do not spend money on training people, because they just leave and go somewhere else”.</p>
<p><br/>I would suggest that if you trained your people, and I mean formal training, (not dragging them into a conference room or back office and pounding the table with cavalier language and threats of termination), your overall production would increase and employee loyalty would go right along with it.</p>
<p><br/>How could you expect your employees to care about your business (and your customers), if they believe (through your actions or otherwise) that you do not care about them (the employee)?</p>
<p><br/>We shower, most of us daily, because after some time the shower wears off and we start stinking again. Training is the same. It is an ongoing process of development and reminders and refinement to the process, until we reach the results we seek. The goals may change along the way, and that’s okay, but having the skillset and arrows in the quiver to hit those targets does not happen by chance.</p>
<p><br/>As Lizelle pointed out, different things motivate different people (different strokes for different folks). Throwing $500 in a pot may work for some but others just want a beer. Instead of getting caught up in the “should’s and shouldn'ts of people, we must understand that they are individuals, with their own internal values, desires and ways of learning and processing information. Placing 10 people in a room to teach with one form of teaching will only impact those who process (learn) the way you (the teacher) happens to be communicating on that day. Others, are just lost.</p>
<p><br/>With people, and this is a people business, one size does not fit all. Save the few who are born on third base, getting home to score is not an easy thing and is usually done one base at a time, with many skills and players required to get the run in to win the game.</p>
<p>I recall conversing with my young son in the backyard when, as I set the ball on the tee for him to hit into the net he said “I’m too old to do this anymore”. Obviously forgetting what made him a good consistent hitter for his previous seasons I chose not to tell him but show him (Arguing your point with a 10 year old is like clapping with one hand).</p>
<p><br/>We went to a Yankee game the following week, arriving early to watch batting practice. My prayer was answered when one of the more consistent hitters on the team stepped to the plate and started hitting balls off the tee into the outfield. I looked over at my son (who was 10 at the time) and looking back at me with fascination he said “I get it Dad”.</p>
<p><br/>The best of the best follow a process of the basics that are required just to compete at a high level of play. Selling is exactly the same. Without the basics, practiced and re-enforced on a consistent timeline, we are leaving the game and the team and the franchise to chance.</p>
<p><br/>Recalling one my first mentors in my former life as a stock broker, early on when I was a “rookie” I walked into his office feeling dejected after just making 350 phone calls that day and not getting the amount of leads I should have. He asked “who sold you?”</p>
<p><br/>“What?”</p>
<p><br/>He continued, “Somebody, maybe several people, in that pile of names sold you on the idea that they were not interested. Find me 10 names in that pile that you think are worthwhile and bring them back in here.” He proceeded to call the 10 that I thought I had a shot with and converted every single one into a qualified lead that was in fact interested.</p>

<p><br/>As opposed to being a wandering generality, define exactly what it is you want. “More money” is not a definitive goal, nor is selling “more cars”. How will you ever know when you reach that arbitrary destination? If you made $1200.00 last week and $1212.50, did you reach your goal? Your guess is as good as mine.</p>
<p><br/>Again, this all assumes that you possess the other key components Lizelle has referenced in her post. Mathematically, they can determine that getting on the phone, doing solid follow up, and upping just an additional 33 people for the month (come in on a couple of off days) and they'll reach their goal.</p>
<p>The Super Bowl can be their dominant, motivating factor, but some work must be recognized and performed to allow them understanding on how to reach that end goal.</p>

<p>Beyond simply writing down the end goal, I think it is important for salespeople to track the numbers they have historically reached to know how to get there.</p>
<p>If a salesperson sells 12 cars - and they have tracked that they had 3 people in front of them each working day for the month (22 working days) then they know it takes all 66 people for that month to move 12 units. Simply put, if they want to be able to afford those Chicago Bears vs. Jets Super Bowl tickets (I can dream, can't I), then they'll need to sell another 6 cars. Mathematically, they can determine that getting on the phone, doing solid follow up, and upping just an additional 33 people for the month (come in on a couple of off days) and they'll reach their goal.</p>
<p>The Super Bowl can be their dominant, motivating factor, but some work must be recognized and performed to allow them understanding on how to reach that end goal.</p>

Then they sit in front of a computer and two-days later they are <span style="text-decoration: underline;">factory “certified”</span> to sell a product that is a technological marvel and costs on average, $30K. It gets better...</p>
<p>They quickly discover that the buying public feels they have a right to treat them rudely and they find their management team is ill-equipped (because of lack of training) to grow and develop them. Most sales people adopt a plan that reads like this; “I’m going to try automotive sales until something better comes along.” And they end up spending more time looking “for something better” than they do studying their profession. Soon just about anything seems better than selling cars.</p>
<p> </p>
<p>Then the 'piece de resistance;' they discover that rather than a new career opportunity they have a “30-day opportunity” because that’s all anyone cares about, the 30-days that make up the current month. Once the current month is over the whole circus starts over again, minus those who didn’t have such a good 30 days. People who work in “30-day worlds” seldom concern themselves with creating a long-term relationship with a customer who spent 3 hours “grinding” any profit (and commission) out of the transaction nor do they care much about any follow up that isn’t required and closely monitored.</p>

<p>It’s easy to talk about the strategies required to motivate one's self, but if the culture and environment is de-motivational only an exceptional few can pull it off. The dealers who recognize this have the motivated and goal oriented sales teams. </p>

<p>Good motivated sales people or the average......The motivated sales driven people should possibly be compensated accordingly and will most likely reach any goals set forth. Not an expert here on that but just a thought</p>

<p>Jason, I totally agree. That is why I believe that any person that runs a dealerships will know very quickly who is motivated or not. Everyone is motivated by different things. You cannot motivate the unmotivated but I have learned to not stop there yet. Do we ever find out what motivates those unmotivated? We are all motivated by something and the trick is to find out what each person, that is key to you, is motivated by. We often forget that motivating people will require one thing....a…</p>
<p>Jason, I totally agree. That is why I believe that any person that runs a dealerships will know very quickly who is motivated or not. Everyone is motivated by different things. You cannot motivate the unmotivated but I have learned to not stop there yet. Do we ever find out what motivates those unmotivated? We are all motivated by something and the trick is to find out what each person, that is key to you, is motivated by. We often forget that motivating people will require one thing....a living example of why they should be motivated. Tell them as you achieve "Sell those cars, this is why I sell this many cars and this is what I get in return". "I care about my customers and I really do, that is why they come back to me and tell all their friends", "I choose to be positive and have great energy at work, everyone is attracted to positive people".</p>
<p>I totally agree that Believe is a great motivation. Some people get motivated by actions, actions make them believe. Just saying that maybe if we step up our own daily actions and give people a reason to be motivated...WHO KNOWS what can happen ...</p>
