How to Use Your Cell Phone While Driving Safely

It is not a good idea to use your cell phone while driving, because it will distract you from concentrating on the road.  However, sometimes out of necessity you may need to.  It is therefore important that you do it safely so as to avoid accidents.  You should use a hands-free device or mount your phone so that you do not hold it in your hands. You can check out some cell phone mounts at

Why You May Want To Consider Not Making That Call

Accidents involving cell phone use while driving are on the rise.    Texting while driving is the major culprit because many people cannot multitask. Trying to keep your hands on the wheels, your focus on the road, and responding to your cell phone, will end up distracting you. Statistics indicate that the incidences are especially high among teens, who lack the necessary driving experience.

Understanding Distracted Driving

When you are driving, there are so many things other than cell phones that will take your attention away from the road.  The volume on your radio could be a distraction; eating or drinking while driving can be dangerous. The activities of the passengers can also put you at risk. If you opt for using a hands-free device, you still have to be very careful to maintain proper focus while driving.

Tips For Safe Cellphone Use

We will share with you some tips you should consider if you have to use your phone while on the road. Some of the tips include:-

  • Only use your phone if you have to, if the conversation can wait, do not answer  or make a call
  • Only use the phone during emergencies
  • Pull over to the side of the road if you have to talk
  • Keep your phone within easy reach.
  • Do not reach for your handbag or into the glove compartment it while you're driving
  • Connect your phone to a hands-free device like a Bluetooth earpiece or headset. Your hands must remain on the wheel at all times
  • Mount your phone within easy hearing or speech capture to make the conversations easier
  • Under no conditions should you text or read any incoming messages
  • Take advantage of technology that allows for voice activation.  use this feature to dial a number you want to call
  • Install speaker or dashboard phone systems

Final Thoughts

Inasmuch as you can use your phone while driving,  we would not recommend it. We, however, do recognize that there are situations that would force you to converse while on the road.  We reiterate that under no condition should you text while driving. The human brain is not wired to take on too many activities at once.

Talking on your cell phone may just be as bad as driving while drunk. When on the road if you must use your cell phone, mount it, or use a hands-free device. It does not give you 100% safety, but at least it makes a small difference.
