I agree with all your comments,, however it's not just women, although that seems to be the biggest issue and opportunity. But I mean truly diverse, if as a manager or dealer you just took several hours and really LOOKED at your traffic, both showroom, phone and internet leads....WHO are these people, not just the count but who are they and then look at your staff and is it as diverse as your client base? Is your management staff as diverse as your sales staff as well?

Pleased to hear from you Marsh and the willingness within your organization to not only recognize a need for change, but to act upon it.  Much to be applauded.  We greatly appreciate clients like you.

You and your store just flat out get it Marsh!!!

Craig, with your help we have 3 female salespeople on our team . It caused us to shake the long-held frat house mentality at our store. Today we look at candidates as candidates and not male or female. We love the diversity & look fwd to adding more diversity (age groups as well) to our team. If WE did it, believe me, any other store can too. Great topic brother.

I try to put as many qualified people in my class, and that includes a lot of females. I see now that there are plenty of women who would by from a store that women salespeople.

Male or female talent is talent. Women are "caution" to join the auto industry but when they do they find out there is huge opportunity to make a good life. More women making auto buying decisions, few saleswomen at stores and out selling men...HUGE MESSAGE. How is your store?

Diversity is not a option, its a necessity. With stats like that, what are you waiting for?

Comment by Bob Gaber on March 26, 2014 at 5:52pm

It kills me when I hear certain dealers will not in anyway consider all possibilities when hiring. I, if I could, would walk away from the deal then to help them propagate a lie. Those statistics are the Fact, so why not build a diversified team that will kick butt and take no prisoners!.

There will be a day when it is easier for all people with talent to build a career in retail auto sales.  Why?  Because at some point the will of the people will demand it.  How many times does one have to hit their finger with a hammer before it sinks in to move your hand?  Maybe it hasn't sunk in or hurt enough for those running stores to realize they are not getting their fair share of the best available talent. News flash, they aren't answering your ads, they aren't willing to work under the current structure.  But, to be certain, the talent pool of potential hires has never been better!  Craig's point is one of encouragement.   It is to our detriment we fail to take heed.

People buy from people, so it has to matter Who they buy from. Also having the proper diversity in your store sends a pure message to your customers in how you view them and that's it's important to you to give them the choices they would like.
