funny little story.  about 26 years ago I was working with the late Bob Tasca Sr in Providence RI.  Without a doubt, one of the all time automotive greats.  Bob had many funny little sayings.  One was... "Business people have three stages: first you get rich, then you get honest, then you get honored".  At first blush one might think Bob was saying business people are not honest in the first stage.  What Bob was really saying, is that when you get 'rich', you stop bullshitting people and tell the truth.  Less smoke and mirrors and more honesty.  Bob was one of the most honest and straightforward dealers I've ever met.  He didn't sell undercoating at a time when it was one of the hottest aftermarket profit items in the business.  Bob would tell customers "I won't sell you that.. it will screw up your car and if anyone else trys to sell it to you, you're getting porked."

A few years later a successful GM was crying in his beer about having to let his new car manager go.  I asked why.  He said the guy was the former used car manager and did a superb job, but when he was promoted to general sales manager for the dealership, new and used, he just wasnt able to cut it.  I asked why he didn't just tell the guy he was the best used car manager the GM had ever met, but sucked as a general sales mgr.  The GM sat up straight in his seat and said.. "do you think he'll be able to swallow his pride?"  I said, I don't know..but isn't it worth being honest with him and getting back the best used car mgr you ever had instead of losing him to a competitor?   Long story short, he followed my advice and the man broke down in tears of happiness... admitting he was way over his head and absolutely thrilled to have his old job back.  My point is, you don't have to wait to get rich to be honest, in fact, honest assessments and appraisals may actually help you get rich a lot quicker and improve your life in the process.  When people talk about me, I like the fact they say "You may not like what he has to tell you, but you can bet he'll tell it like it is."

Randy, its a good message.  Let me just add one thought.  Before you 'dump' people you perceive to be negative, tell them about it.  To their face.  It's just amazing how many negative, downer people don't realize how destructive they are to themselves and to those around them.  Of course if they are comfortable in their skin and have no plans to make changes, then its time to say goodbye.  The reality is, that all of us, at some point in time get down...get negative and we need wake up calls.  Only the people who truly care about you will level with you.  I'm not a negative person, but I have exhibited behavorial traits that were counter productive.  Fortunately, I had good friends who weren't afraid to let me know without mincing words.  I'm thankful to this day for those friends.  Thanks again for the 'positivity' message.
