Are you the reason your candidate list is not strong?

In the ever changing auto world, the one item that does and will always remain a constant is the necessity of quality people. This of course begs the question how do I get the most qualified and professional individuals?

Now don’t go beating yourself up looking for an answer to that question. Instead spend some time finding an answer to the following; why do I not have a file of qualified candidates to choose from already in my possession?

Does your reputation precede you? Do you have a group of engaged, loyal staff working for you currently? I know this is a very difficult self-evaluation, however, if you truly want to capture the best possible employees, you had best make sure you are providing an environment that people wish to be part of.

No different than your customers, potential employees are looking for some specifics when applying for a job; reputation, quality products, quality people, and a friendly environment are just a few of the areas of concern for candidates.  If you are not offering your employees the same quality and services you offer your customers then how can you expect to attract the quality professionals you are looking for?

Here is a simple question you should ask yourself as part of evaluating your current operations: Would I enjoy being an employee in the current environment? (Keep in mind just because you are profitable it is not a reason to say YES) If the answer is yes great, you probably have a list of quality candidates to choose from that are seeking a great place to work. If you said anything other than YES, then maybe you should look at making small but effective changes to make your operation a more desired place to work. Here are a few items to focus on;

  1. Loyalty – Do you have a number of long term employees, or do you have a revolving door?
  2. Engagement – Are your employees engaged? Do they share your vision and work at a common goal in all departments?
  3. Integrity – Do your staff feel you are a man or woman of integrity, that can be trusted to be fair and equitable to all staff?
  4. Value – Do you value your employees? When was the last time you recognized someone for an accomplishment outside of the business or on whim decided to buy lunch for the staff?
  5. Communication – How much time do you invest in a day or week talking with your staff? “I’m too busy” is not the right answer. These are the people that are working to drive profits to your business, they deserve your attention.

If you can improve in any or all of these areas not only will you find more quality applications coming your way, you will most likely see improvements in your overall business.  I wish you luck.
