BLACK BOOK: MARKET VALUES CONTINUE TO SEE WEAK RETENTION TOWARD END OF YEAR

According to Black Book® data, the average price of a used vehicle for model years 2011-2015 depreciated by -2.3% in November, in line with the expectations at this time of the year. In comparison, the depreciation rate in October was -2.9% and a year ago in November was -2.8%. Cars overall saw lower retention in November, ending the month at -2.6% compared with –3.2% in October. Trucks as a whole finished at -2.1% in November versus a depreciation of -2.6% in November. All vehicles are currently averaging a 12-month depreciation change of -16.6%.

In November, Sub-Compact Luxury CUVs saw the highest drop in value at -3.8%. Vehicles in this category include the Audi Q3, BMW X1, Mercedes-Benz GLA Class and Mini Cooper Countryman. Vehicles in the Compact Car segment finished October averaging $18,349, a -22.8% change from a year ago ($23,783).

Full-Size Luxury CUV/SUVs and Full-Size Pickups saw the strongest retention in value, dropping -1.5% from the previous month. Vehicles in the Full-Size Luxury CUV/SUV segment include the Audi Q7, Cadillac Escalade, Land Rover Range Rover, Lexus LX 450 and the Toyota Land Cruiser. Vehicles in this segment finished the month at $36,586. Vehicles in the Full-Size Pickup segments include Ford F150, Chevrolet Silverado 1500, Ram 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500. Trucks in this category finished November averaging $22594, a -12.7% change from a year ago ($25,892).

In another sign of accelerated depreciation, the 12-month average depreciation for all car segments a year ago was -16.6%, compared with -19.1% for this year entering December. However, the real story is trucks, which showed -8.0% a year ago compared with -14.7% this year.

“As the year comes to an end, accelerated depreciation is to be expected across virtually every segment,“ said Anil Goyal, Senior Vice President of Automotive Valuation and Analytics for Black Book. “That being said, we will be keeping an eye on certain segments such as Sub-Compact Luxury CUV, Sub-Compact Crossover and Sporty Cars as they have shown weaker retention rates over the past month.”
