I have a question: I have heard these two schools of thought debated for years...
Is it a better idea to promote from within your organization, such as a sales consultant promoted to Sales Manager, or is it better to hire from outside the organization for a management position?

Would love to hear your thoughts on this..........

Nancy,

It is very difficult to promote a Salesperson to Management unless you have the right answers to a couple of questions.

The most important is, did this Salesperson follow ALL of the processes and directives of their Management Staff while a Salesperson?

If you can not answer this one question affirmatively, how can they be expected to be able to hold their peers accountable when they are put in that position?
Thanks Dennis,

I have always been a proponent for promoting within, but like you said, it must be the right person and for the right reasons... To pacify a whiner, or promote a great salesperson to management, does not always mean he/she will be a great leader! You could ultimately now be left weakening two vital positions!

Looking forward to what others have to say about this subject!

I believe it to be better to promote from within. It says a lot about a management team when they are capable of promoting from within. Strong leadership can always train the right attitudes.

And believe it or not, the right leadership can take a person with a negative attitude and turn it positive as well...

It's amazing how negativity is so contagious and yet how positivity is even more contagious... B.C.

Great Topic Nancy...
Thanks Bobby! I agree...
Also, I have seen great sales consultants leave the dealership to accept a management position offered from a competing dealership and the dealership loses on many accounts... great sales consultant, potential successful manager, customer base, and morale in the dealership perceived from the realization there is no opportunity inside the dealership... Who wins?? The competing dealership down the road!!!!
