How a Brand New Phone Taught Me Tolerance

I hate people.

Okay, I don't., I work with people every single day, so part of me must enjoy them a bit. Truth be told, I often find it hard to tolerate people who speak slowly, or seemingly lack intelligence. I  dread the 10 phone calls a day that begin:

"Hey There, Katie Speaking, what can I do for you today?"
"Hi. I. Um...yeah...I was...um.... calling...to....I, Uh."

I feel my blood pressure rise in the moment the phone rings at this point.

I know not everyone is as fast paced as I am, I know people need patience, and I know that people require understanding. I get it, I get it, I get it. Sometimes, I feel like I just can't give it.

Then today, I got a package. My long awaited new Android. I had an Android before, but it was horrible. I'm talking resetting in the midst of talking to clients horrible. So here I am with my brand new Samsung Fascinate. It has an on screen keyboard. My very first one. I am now typing about one word per minute and hitting backspace about 100 times a day.  And I've only had the phone for 3 hours.

This post has a point. I'm getting to it. Promise!

Right now, I'm that really annoying, slow, unsure person who likes to call me at work three times a day. As much as I want to get back to my million words a minute, clickety click abilities, I just can't. I can only give what I can give right now. What I can give may seem minimal at the moment, and may make colleagues a bit unhappy that it takes me 10 minutes to reply to an e-mail that used to take me 10 seconds, but again, I'm giving my everything.

As time goes on, and as I have more patience and practice, I'll get better. I'll learn to tolerate this damn phone. And I'll learn to give people the courtesy that they deserve knowing that they're just communicating in the way they know. They're giving me everything they've got. And it's enough.
