I have an '85 Mustang known as a "Four-Eyed Fox".because of the old-school headlights.

I stopped-by a local Ford store's performance store at 8 AM "just"looking". While there I mentioned to the counter-man that my stick-shift did not feel as smooth as I would like. He showed me a modern synthetic gear oil and said that this would take care of that issue. OK,  As he rung-it-up  he asked if I would  like them to put it in the car now. For just $ 20 of course. They put my car on the lift and did the job  -- and showed me that my brakes were so past due that EVERYTHING was gone. And I mean everything ! Uh oh. So  they began calculating an estimate that I expected to be astronomical. After 10 minutes they showed me the complete overhaul from master cylinder to pads using OEM Ford parts. The total came to just short of 1k - including the gear lube. And the time estimate with 2 techs was "hopefully before lunch". They were done by 11. A week later I told this to other Mustang owners at a car show. Word-of-mouth is good - but Facebook with pics and video would have been invaluable marketing forever. The VALUE they provided along with no doubt that the work had been performed properly and with the correct parts was 5-of-5.

The only critique -  is that they did NOT document how a "just looking" became an instant thousand dollar service and a very satisfied customer. While waiting I browsed the new car showroom "just looking".  Of course I do not need a new car. But maybe someday. If used cars had had a FOX ... I am always tempted.

I LIKE letting professionals with the tools and training and parts do the job completely and right.

Dealers should take the same lesson - let you do what you do - this job is important and should be done completely right   --  for them.  Not D.I.Y.
