Dealers & Managers: Don’t Widen the Plate by Richard Keeney

A 78 year old famous baseball couch filled the auditorium in 1996 at Chris Sperry’s first of many American Baseball Coaches Association conventions. What John Scolinos spoke about was more than baseball. For his whole speech Coach Scolinos wore a strung up home plate around his neck and after his lengthy introduction, dived into the meat of his speech. As he pointed out that every baseball organization from Little League to the major Leagues all use the same size home plate. No group is allowed to widen home plate for those less advantaged.

This lesson touched the lives of hundreds of players and coaches. Coach Scolinos’ wisdom transcended baseball because he was much more than a baseball coach. His message was as clear as a bell as he went on to emphasize how baseball coaches need to hold their players accountable, no matter how skilled they are, but also our families – our children, spouse, and our communities.

In looking at John Scolinos’ message, we are reminded that in any organization, managers have a huge responsibility to improve the business and increase sales, but we must never “widen the plate” for any one for any reason. Structure and accountability allows organizations and their employees to thrive.
