SilkRoad Study: Social Media and The Workplace

How does your company handle the social media accounts of employees? In the past, it wasn’t really an issue, but every day it becomes more of a problem. Employers want to know about their employees, and employees want their personal lives to stay private. How do you navigate these muddy waters? It’s truly a challenge, one that is only going to become more arduous as time rolls on.

SilkRoad has released a great data-set that covers most aspects of HR and social media colliding. It details the common pitfalls like companies asking for passwords, companies restricting social access, and even companies who fear espionage! Whether you’re an employee or employer, you absolutely need to be informed about how social media relates to employment.

The infographic below details the findings of SilkRoad’s study. Original article about SilkRoad's social media study posted on Wikimotive's blog under the title Social Media and The Workplace.

What there is to be gained from not strangling your employees internet access at work, far outweighs the possibility of loss of productivity. Especially if you have the right atmosphere and culture.

I just think it's ridiculous that a company would ask for an employee's Facebook password whether it's as a condition of applying or otherwise, it's a clear violation of privacy.

Also think about the social lift you could get with everyone in your store liking/sharing/retweeting your stuff

I definitely agree with you Zach, just imagine if all your employees were active on your businesses social media, each of those employees are connected to 200 people on average, most likely in your area... you do the math.

Great infographic, I believe it's very important not to limit employee access to social networks like Facebook, rather you should be fostering a social environment where your employees want to get involved in your social media campaign.
