Wendi tells a story of a dealers training method. I would like to know how the dealers you work for or work with hires and trains new salespeople.

I finding most use the teach yourself product and Sink or Swim when we let you on the floor. What have you found?

I use a compination of things. When we hire a new person for sales they are given their expectations for the next 30 days. Training with Salary. We immerse them into Product knowledge training during the first week so that they may become familiar with what they are selling. Next we introduce the Selling Process of the Store and CRM training so that they understand the steps we want them to do as a dealer. Last we set them up with Joe Verde Training Online. We monitor progress in each phase of the 30 day training and once they "Graduate" each step then they are paired up with an experienced Sales Person to shadow for 1 to 2 weeks. Then they are set "free" with constant monitoring and evaluation. The "Experienced Sales Person" earns a 10% over-ride on the New Hire during the 1st 30 days of being on the floor so that there is a vested interest in helping them improve and not just using them as a personal assistant. We also conduct on going Phone Training where every sales person must pass "Certification" to allowed to recieve Phone Leads/Internet Leads.

www.jvtn.com is Joe Verde Online. There is a cost but well worth it.
Experience has shown me the best automotive sales people are the ones that either avoid or reject traditional automotive sales training. They are also adept at subverting the typical dealership sales process so they don't appear so bufoonish to the prospects. They learn their product, they understand the importance of quality follow up and they do not do the stupid stuff that is taught online by the group referenced in another reply.

Most online "sales training" is cheap because the content is dated; there is truth to the line "you get what you pay for." While some subject matter is effectively delivered online, it is difficult to do for sales training. The most effective sales training available is taught by companies and individuals who bring modern sales strategies with automotive applications from outside the automotive industry.
I agree with you Mr Richards. How about training the sales people to get their own customers and live on repeat and referral customers from the start. Find a trainer that will take them on a demo, take them out prospecting, do a service walk and so on. Hands on trainind is the best. This takes time and you get far better results than standing in a class and telling them. Show me don't tell me is what I here from sales people all the time. The dealers that have trained there people like this are at the top. There is only one training company that does this. The trainer has written an article for AutoSuccess magazine for next month. Two dealers have just set an all time record for sales. One dealer delivers 1500 cars a month. The other dealer is now # 1 in 6 states using this kind of training. I agree with you to find a trainer to train on something that you don't already know that makes sence and stick with it. We do that kind of training. Good luck to all.
