One of the challenges that all Dealers and Managers face in this business is where to find the kind of people that will grow their business and advance their goals for success.  Finding the right people in such a competitive market as the retail automotive industry can be challenging today, and in my experience the best place to start is outside of the existing pool of candidates that have already been in this business for a while.

The right attitude is often more valuable than previous experience.  It’s far easier to teach someone new skills if you don’t have to un-teach them the old ones first.  Take a novice who wants a better career in their life and put them through our Automotive Sales Training and you are very likely to end up with a great employee who appreciates the opportunity and becomes an effective and lasting addition to your staff.

Look for people who already have experience working directly with Customers.  Selling cars is a Customer focused business and if someone is already working in a retail environment they will have experience with Customers.  Don’t rely on the old ‘gift of gab’ concept when looking for a new Salesperson.  The ability to listen and learn is much more important than the knowing how to impress someone with your words.  Waitresses and people who work in places like Home Depot or Best Buy offer great potential if they are doing well and enjoy their work.  Find someone who loves to serve Customers and you can turn that person into a dynamic producer with the right car sales training.

In our April DLA Overdrive Magazine, we did a one-on-one interview with Bruce Low who came out of the retail cellular phone business and decided to give car sales a try.  With absolutely no experience in this business, he went through our 5-Day Introductory Automotive Sales Course at our DLA Training Center near Philadelphia and in the first 100 days, he sold 102 vehicles.  If you haven’t already read the interview, you will see why I recommend this type of new hire.

Find someone who already likes working with people and expose them to the best training curriculum.  Your chances for success are far better and your investment in training them is likely to have great results for your Dealership.
