I recently received a solicitation from a fairly well known someone I won't name regarding a program to market to dealerships. I reviewed it and wasn't interested. Apparently that makes me a "loser".

Within 2 days of the offering which was apparently made to many people (there was an attachment with names) among them was a name I knew. It was a former prominent dealer featured in Automotive News front page articles in the past. A blanket email was sent out to all that had not responded to the offer. I was astounded by the message and asked that I be removed his list as quickly and completely as possible.

If he worked for me in any capacity that relationship would have been severed immediately regardless of to whom words like these were directed. If I was his client and became aware of this type of sales technique that relationship would be severed also. His MUST be a highly dysfunctional organization.

What would your response have been to this:

  Folks,

I have done my very best to convince you that we will increase all forms of advertising on the Internet, newspapers, television, radio, bill boards, mail, and every form of advertising known to man! I have shown you, proved it to you and still some doubt what I say! You are dead wrong to feel that way without trying what I shared with all. In fact, you are an idiot not to try this approach for your clients or for yourself. I consider you a complete idiot because you are living in yesterday's newspapers and you belong there! I can also say whatever I want to say because NOBODY else can do what we do! Nobody on earth. Be smart and double or increase your advertising response rate 200 to 500%! The choice is yours. Be an idiot or gain some insight! I hope you choose to climb out of the IDIOT category! Please ask to have me take you off my E-mail list and I will do so gladly. I am tired of IDIOTS who do not and can not recognize opportunities! Please take this wake up call or continue to be an absolute IDIOT. I really don't care which way you want to be! I am so successful, I can't stand it! Why don't you join us and listen? We hang with winners and not losers! Join us and win! Don't and we do not even give a crap! Continue to be the loser you are! You are no longer on my team or a potential client! Go away and ask me to delete your sorry uncommitted ass! There is no time or room for a loser!

Yeah Mike,

My initial response was a little over the top for even me.  It may be that I am from the South, that I am a preacher's kid or that I grew-up in a house with 9 brothers and sisters but I have this built-in mechanism that says, "Why use 5 words when you can use 50."  LOL

I thought about that email more last night and then this morning and you know that the more that I thought about it the sadder it made me.  Someone who would throw gasoline all over their trade, their career, their craft under the guise of, "We don't need you anyway!  I'm so successful I can't stand it!" (because that's what allsuccessful people say) either has some deep-seeded issues that they need to work out or they have grown in their position to a ceiling and this is how they compensate for not having that capacity to grow any further.

Either way, that email was written by one very unhappy person.

Have a great week!

David,

Though I don't see it here I did receive an email containing your first response to this posting.

I found it to elegant, eloquent and right on.

I talk to myself, verbalize the sentiments knowing full well no good would ever come of it if spoken to the person to whom it was directed. So talking to myself I get to say what I want without damaging myself in the process.

Negativity like exhibited in the post can do no good and advances no cause, whether it's in business or in personal relationships.

I don't agree with the why he gets his point across. But I will say dealers do waste alot of resource on managment and can't seem to look outside the box at all when it comes to marketing. Its not that they are idiots, its that they tend to let idiots run their dealerships.

The answers are within the customer and the salesperson sit down and talk to them you have way to much management between you and your car deals especialy the deals your missing.

Seems the guy wasn't writing in generalities Chris. It was a direct statement to the receipients of the message and there were many.

That was like driving by a bad wreck on the highway...I really knew that was a bad email but I read it anyway...

That's 2 minutes I'll never get back ever....Can't even believe I responded to it...

Lets get on to more positive things in our business..
