Social Networking, does it REALLY work?

I've been battling an uphill battle for months telling my dealer group
social networking and social media is the future and we need to keep
working it. They want to sell cars NOW, and I get that. However, I've
been having a hard time putting the facts behind the social work I do
for my store. I believe the sale will come, but not soon enough. The big
questions is... does social networking REALLY work to sell more cars?
What are some of the real-world thoughts out there?

Me too.  If an Internet Director has the department selling over twenty percent of leads, he needs to focus on other areas to develop business.  If not, then concentrate on the basics.

If you are truely a market leader, you can throw money at everything to gain additional business.  To me this is something that is best done by the consumer relations manager.

social networking no sooner puts people in the market for a car then a dating website gives them the urge to have sex. at best it is another form of advertising in an already over advertised industry. i met my wife at the grocery store. (17 years ago)

If their focus is on "selling more", then it doesn't work. If their focus is on relationships, then it will. The results are indirect - and it is the art of making the invisible relationship visible: Social Media is best used as an additional avenue to connect with more people, serve their needs better - and one more way to becoming better connected with the people you already know. You can't calculate the ROI on a Raving Fan - and that's why they don't get it. Tell them to focus on the quality of the relationships in their life... Yes, it's the people that matter and not the number of sales. Once they put themselves 2nd, they will get to experience the magic of the "other side of the coin".

James Smith posted on FB: Dealers saying "I want to sell cars NOW, is like saying 'I want big muscles today!" Todays sold units started days if not months ago (advertising, referrals, etc..) Social networking is a must for dealers to survive in the future. Today will always take care of itself, tomorrow is what dealers need to start working on!

Bob Gaber Posted on FB: Like a fine wine, you need to plant the seeds, grow the grapes, pick the grapes, crush the grapes, mix the grapes with the right chemicals, put the mixture in a fermenting container, then bottle the still young wine, age the wine, sell the wine and then collect the profit. And I am not even talking about selecting the right bottle, cork material or advertising the wine... What we are doing is throwing the brick. (Planting for the future.)

Dealers are like lions... They hunt when they are hungry! The farmer works the soil and plants his crops and waits patiently for them to grow.

Yes it does Mike! The Salesman need to buy into it first!
My son Frank Luna is on just on one site FB and works at a small kia store outside of the big Houston market!
He has just over 200 friends and I mean REAL friends and they buy all there from him and send him business all month every month ! he sold 28 cars last month and made 17-K!
Again just one site!
Its still takes the saleman to sell the cars, social networking just takes the hard work of prospecting out of it and makes it easier.
Also I feel social networking is like learning a game of basketball, It dont matter how good you can shoot if you can dribble the ball.
Ball handling skills come first then when you become strong in that skill it will make you a better shooter,no look passer, and you will become great! So the key is to pick one maybe two social networking venders and Focus on the ball handling skills first and master it, when thats happen you will be ready to shoot 3 pointers and hit nothing but net!
Dealers need to sell cars now and Im a big believer that it can happen NOW! Ive done it at to many Dealships to say it cant be done.
Call Me If there is anything I can do for you Mike.
God Bless!
