Hello Members-

I thought we could start the discussion off with a topic that is essential to all of us.  Where do you go to find quality sales associates?  Do you use a training company?  Do you advertise online? Do you pay for referrals?

What source do you think is the best outlet for finding quality sales people?  Let the group know what you have used that has been successful.

It often seems like there is no unemployment problem but an unemployable people problem...I'm sure we have all had many applicants show up dressed like they just finished doing lawn work, no pen and simply unprepared for an interview. This certainly lends to the idea that we can't find good people. ..There is no simple answer and our profession doesn't lend itself to attracting good applicants.  Once you start to discuss the hours, dedication, complicated commission plans, good applicants run for the door.

I have had luck with recruiters like automax and sites like careerbuilder.  I have also had good luck with a simple ad on craigslist....I don't really have trouble finding applicants..Keeping good people is a better plan. It all starts the first day. Show the selected applicants a lot of reasons to want to work for your dealership for the long term.  It all begins with a solid training program. Not only sales training but the dealership process, CRM systems, ethics, people skills, respect, true customer service and make it ongoing forever for everyone.  A payplan that helps get the applicant started without worrying about draws or no income.  We have all had top quality salespeople that didn't start off like a superstar but ended up being very good with some help. How many give up before they had a chance?  This is usually a dealership problem that we end up blaming the applicant... A management team that has the time, desire and dedication to the success of new sales associates..I bet if a manager had his pay plan bonus tied to the success of a new salesperson they would have much better success..

Like a baseball team, you not going to have 9 players in the lineup hitting .300 and your not going to have all your salespeople be superstars...but with more focus on the proper on going training, real dedication not just lip service and stop the mentality of selling cars today like we did in 1980 the entire team will be better.  It starts at the top.

Thanks for the mention Rich, appreciate that

Joe,

I think you will find Indeed to be the largest of all the job boards. In addition almost all job postings end up on Indeed after they have sat on other job boards. They also have a free resume free search option. I think you will find Indeed is the best bang for the buck too.

As most are aware hiring issues go far beyond knowing where to post jobs but I will digress since that wasn't your question. I think you will find Indeed is your best bang for the buck. As a sales staffing company I use other resource that are not nearly as effective as they only tend to work well in passive recruiting which is not recommended for in-house recruiting due to the industry fall-out. These would included social media and direct-call into other dealerships which is a common practice among the best known company bands in America including automotive manufacturers. Again, they use third-party agency to do the recruiting to mask their name.

I hope this brings to the discussion table some different view points.
