A Market we should all be watching and participating in.

Automotive News on customizing...

Automotive news says its a $30 Billion business.  Manufacturers are doing little to tap the market and dealers even less. This is no longer a market to watch.  It is time to get involved.  Do something.  Do anything, but don't sit idle.  We are testing the waters with stylish leathers, matte…

Does Carfax have a Monopoly?

Carfax has a very unique business model.  Tell the consumer they need to ask for a “free” Carfax report from their dealer (who then pays a hefty fee).  The exclusivity…

This Forbes article on Best Buy could easily apply to automotive retailing.

Why Best Buy is Going out of Business...Gradually

Electronics retailer Best Buy is headed for the exits.  I can’t say when exactly, but my guess is that it’s only a matter of time, maybe a few more years.…

Get a Free Education

Going back to school...often a "resolution" for the New Year.  Several free sites exist, all well know and well respected exist where we can all go to improve our knowledge.  While you won't get a degree from these sites, you can get a certificate of completion.  I for one am not necessarily a "Certificate collector" and value the information much more.

Here are three site I am aware of:

Have you completed your planning for next year?

Hopefully many dealers have had their strategic planning meetings with their staff and set goals for next year.  Identified their Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities and Threats...established the tactics they will use to accomplish their goals. Mind maps are helpful tools you might consider...many free or inexpensive mind mapping tools are available online or as apps for ipads and such.  I use ithoughts on the ipad.  A good friend prefers the web based …

How prevalent are drug in the auto business and what are you doing about it?

We have had our share of drug addicted employees over the last year. Many were productive salespeople and kept their problems from being our problems, except when they didn’t. That is when we reviewed our policy, fine tuned it and began testing all new hires, anyone suspected of drug use and anyone involved in any kind of accident or mishap.

It is my observation that our industry either attracts people with addictive personalities or drives more people to use illicit drugs. Might it…

How to reduce that stack of magazines piling up on your desk.

Got a stack of magazines on your desk? Tear out relevant articles and ditch the rest. You will get through it faster and feel better.

If you want to fancy it up, separate your articles into folders or files.

If you are digitally savvy, scan them in, fax them to yourself, or take a photo with…

Would you spiff for an appointment?

We put a spiff on today.  10/10/10/10.  The salespeople were challenged to have all of their appointments in the CRM by 10am.  Any logged appointment who shows is good for $10.  If that same appointment writes, another $10.  If that same write Spots, another $10.  As of 2pm we had 16…

Lower your used car inventory now!

The experts have been saying it for weeks. Lower your used car inventory now.  AutoRemarketing.com says "Kelley Blue Book calculated that used-vehicle values dropped 2.6 percent overall in October, marking the fifth consecutive month of wholesale declines.

Since peaking in June, KBB discovered used-vehicle values overall have sunk 10 percent with the most pronounced…

Proper pricing sells used cars

Our jump from 30 Used per month to 130 was no accident.  A year ago we priced by gut or by rule.  "Add $3000 to our inventory price" is what many dealers continue to subscribe to.  We found religion with Dale Pollack and Vauto.  Of course there are other tools out there.  I like what Dale Pollack has to say and thus went with his product. (no, they didn't pay me to say this).  Our experience selling used cars is that we could spend any amount of money in the local "Auto Shopper", local…
