Follow Me - I'm Right Behind You

Last week I was busy leading a class of new salespeople through our 21st Century Sales Program(c) and as with all of my classes, one or two students always emerge as leaders but, not always the ones you'd think.  There are the ones who are eager to participate, but they aren't necessarily the leaders.  Others seem to know the answers to all the questions, but that may not mean leadership.

The ones that stand out are often in the background.  But, if you recognize them, you…

Who Would You Take A Bullet For?

That's a tough question.  It can put many people on the spot and get others thinking, perhaps to reeavluate life's priorities.  Maybe, as we end the week, this is a bit to tough a topic even for those who participate.  For those of us who served in the military, the answer is as simple as we do it for our country.  Now that we're civilians, perhaps the answer changed.  At this point in my life, the list is short - My father and mother, my son and daughter, and my best friend since I was 2…

How Nineteen Patriots Made a Difference in the Auto Industry

IIt is not my job, it is my duty to be inspired and inspire others.  Since my early twenties, I have said final farewells to nineteen brave patriots, heroes and friends.  Each paid the price for freedom before the rigors of life made them old and gray.  These are nineteen friends that I had planned to grow old with, but instead I honor their sacrifice to trade in their future as an investment in my…

Finding Your USP

You've just gotten comfortable at the dinner table.  The food looks great and it's one of the rare occassions where the whole family is there.  The conversation is interrupted by a ringing phone and on the other end of the line, "Good evening, my name is_______ and I hope I haven't interrupted anything but I have some fantastic news about your eligibility for  more insurance coverage..."

How excited are you about calls like that?

Yet, if you have a family, a…

Tall Tales in the Retail World: Sales and Management Training

I am a vertically enhanced female which I normally see as a benefit, except when I am trying to buy clothing.  Most of the clothing options for women do not come with a choice for inseam or length.  This often leaves me in the dressing room wondering if I can pull of this dress being too short or do these jeans look like capris or a fashion faux pas.  I am stuck in a world in which one-height-fits-all…

Hiring Mistakes Dealers Make When Looking For Sales People

Let's be honest, placing ads for hiring sales people is the least fun thing to do in the business.  You have to design it, place it and then wait.  And, since your primary role is to sell, service, and deliver vehicles, your creativity just isn't into this.  You never know when an interview will show up, how to determine if they're qualified, or when to decide if they…

Who Is Your Competition?

Things are moving fast these days.  Business is conducted at the speed of a mouse click.  To gain a competitive advantage and have any chance at success, you not only have to know who your competition is, but you need to understand them as well.  Too many managers, owners, and top executives have lost sight of the real competition out there.  So, just who is the real…

Failure is an Option, Quitting is Not

Dreams are often the seeds in which goals are grown from, but it takes acting on a dream to achieve a goal.  Sometimes big goals can be as overwhelming as a football field to a five year old.  Like that scared five year old, we can let a daunting task get in the way of our success because of a fear of failure. When engaging in…

Sales Peformance Lesson: High Jump

Following in the footsteps of three generations of outstanding educators, I took on the career of a high school teacher in my early twenties.  Being the new kid on the block, I was given two classes out of five that were "at risk" students.  High school students don't usually relish in the idea of math class and most "at risk" kids seem to see math as a total…

If You Do It All - Nothing Gets Done

Whether you're on the road like I am, or working in a showroom, you have to produce.  At the end of the month, the results fall squarely on your shoulders.  But, if you believe that you have to do it all in order to reach those goals, you'll never get there.  Clawing your way to the top is never very effective.  But, being carried to the top is not only a better way to travel, it's a faster means to an…

Do For - Do With - Let Do

Training.  It's an important element to any successful department.  While it's my livelihood now, when I was managing dealerships, I think I missed a lot of opportunities to be a better trainer.  Standing in front of a room for an hour or less delivering a technique or other instruction, just didn't create the improvement I was looking for.  Later in my career, many managers confirmed that belief with their own experience.  While multi-day training programs, with notebooks and class…

Sales Performance Training: Managing Superstars

Everyone has worked with Negative Nellie and Cantankerous Craig and seen how they can poison the waters of progress with their hater-aide.  Their less than inspiring attitude spread like a cancer through what was once an optimistic and forward moving team.  To managers and fellow peers, it is easy to identify the Nellies and Craigs and see the impact they have on team success.

There is…

Closing The Orphanage

Remember those old movies about the dark dank rooms that unwanted children were forced to live in.  They were left to fend for themselves, poorly fed, and ignored until they were old enough to go somewhere else on their own.  While some of these movies became musicals, an orpahn's life was not a pretty one.  How about those who have been left by the wayside when their salesperson moves on?  Are they just being ignored until they move on?

Orphan owners may be the most ignored…

Sales Staff Recruiters: Don't Spoil the Apple Barrel

“What is the number one challenge most dealers have with improving profits?”  1) Employee Turnover, 2) Capital, 3) Inventory, 4) Process, and 5) Recruiting Talent.  Of those polled, 30% answered “Recruiting Talent”.

It is not rocket surgery (it is easier to build a rocket than trouble shoot and repair one) as to how talent affects the dealership’s bottom line.  What puzzles me is why…

Making a Difference: Sales Performance Training Lesson

If the world was devoid of you, what would it be like and contrast that with if you were the whole world?  Which do you think would be the better place?

The above question was something that passed through my busy brain one night as I prepared for duty the next day at the office.  It seemed like an interesting way to…

Management and Sales Performance Training: Embracing Boredom

IIt does not happen often, but sometimes I find myself bored.  This week I find myself working remotely with my toes in the sandy.  Without the distractions of the office, I am actually finding myself completing my normal task list with time to be bored.  So how does someone who is usually as busy as a bee handle boredom?  I have learned to embrace this simple and rare luxury as a gift to take a…

Sheep, Sheepdogs and Wolves-Leadership Lessons from the Flock

As an invited guest to the NAS Pensacola National Naval Aviation Museum, I had the honor of attending the "winging" of a group of young aviators.  Rear Admiral Mark Vance was the guest speaker to address this assembly of recently graduated Navy and Marine aviators with a welcome to the fleet speech.  I found myself feeling like I too was being given a "charge to order on the tip of the spear".  The…

Management and Sales Performance Training Lesson: Authenticity

Becoming a Motivational Leader

Create a big vision

To become a motivational leader, you start with motivating yourself. You motivate yourself with a big vision, and as you move progressively toward its realization, you motivate others to work with you to fulfill that vision. You have to have that carrot in front of the horse!

Set high standards

You exhibit absolute honesty and integrity with everyone in everything you do. You are the kind of person others admire and respect and want to be like. You set a… Continue
