R U a Noun or Verb Christian?

What is your faith like...is it a noun, a thing, or a verb, something in action to which others might point and remark there is something "different" about you.

This is not an academic exercise. There is nothing that Jesus preached or His apostles wrote about faith and following Christ that is not verb-oriented. Yes, faith itself is a noun, but as James says, faith without works is dead. Please do not read this to mean works = salvation. Scripture is very clear that salvation is by faith alone.

So, what do we mean by being a Verb Christian? Is it attending church or tithing or donating time and money to charity...or taking care of an elder relative? These are all good things we all should do, if presented with the opportunity. Church attendance by itself simply says the individual attends church -- it reveals nothing about their changed heart, their obedience to Christ's commands or their submission of their ego/themselves/stuff/TV/sport/business to God and to others (especially their spouse).

Hey, Anna, I like the way you think! God's bigger than our reputations and any of our blunders! Sounds like when Paul was writing the Philippians (Phil 1:12-18), how he said that even the fact that he was in prison helped promote the gospel. It allowed others to preach the gospel some "out of eny and rivalry but others out of goodwill." He said the important thing was that "in every way, whether from false motives or true, Christ is preached. And because of this I rejoice." We can stand some discomfort/ridicule knowing that Christ is being preached, right?

Jim, thanks for sharing on meditation. Our church small group is going to study "The Celebration of Discipline," by Richard Foster. I read the book long ago and started to read it again. The first chapter is on meditation and I have been trying to practice it, including meditation on the scriptures. Must be what the Spirit is saying to the churches!

I spent some time meditating this weekend on Psalm 1:1, in particular the first line, "Blessed is the man that walketh not in the counsel of the ungodly..." and I took out a sheet of paper and noted ways that I do still walk in the ways of the world and how or where my attitudes are still swayed or intrigued by the world. Every scripture is either a window into God and His commands for us or it is a mirror that reflects our life back to us. This verse mirrored to me ways in which I need to continue the renewing of mind to achieve a more Godly walk.

Great discussion topic! I think this prediction got a lot of people thinking and delving into the Word. I feel like there were many people brought closer to God and their path in Him because of it. I don't know if his prediction was self-serving or not but I think it has helped solidify what I believe. I think am more confident in my biblical knowledgeable and it has opened many doors for me to share my faith. If this saved one person, it was worth a little embarrassment.

Jim      I have listen to Harold Camping and always thought he was very knowledgeable in scripture. But to miss Mathew 24:36 whereby "NO ONE KNOWS THE DAY OR THE HOUR, NOT EVEN THE ANGELS OR JESUS..." He really missed this one. Hopefully this did not turn off too many thinking that all Christians are this goofy. I agree with Donna to continue to pray for our misguided brothers & sisters that this will not hinder their decision.

Yes, I find it disturbing. You wonder how a verse like that could be overlooked by a pastor who has been through seminary. And people who don't believe tend to paint us all with the same brush--and use incidents like this as an excuse to reject the gospel. But we just have to pray for our misguided brothers and sisters.

Does it bother you when Christians (so-called?) make erroneous statements predicting the end of times? These false predictions simply feed the world's perception that Christians are goof-balls. Did not that man read and understand Matthew 24:36?

This is a really cool article about how the gospel is spreading in London's financial community: http://www.independent.co.uk/news/business/analysis-and-features/go...
