Why there Needs to be MORE Conferences

Driving Sales

I was having a discussion with a dealer over a nice vodka tonic and a nice cigar when the discussion turned to conferences. "There are just too many that it's hard to know which ones to go to and which ones to skip," he said.

This concerned me a bit. I've been on that side of the debate before but with the help of friends like Jared Hamilton, Brian Pasch, and Ralph Paglia I have come to the conclusion that the industry doesn't have enough conferenes. Before…

Sow What You Wish To Reap

Like it or not, sowing and reaping is a real principle we all live by. Everybody on earth, every profession is under the law of sowing and reaping. The law of sowing a reaping can be either good or bad. For example, take the high school student who maintains a high GPA- staying up late at night in order to complete assignments and prepare for tests; that…

Jerks also sell them...

I recently posted a blog called Jerks buy cars too. It has gotten over 430 views and some great reviews. It made me think, jerks sell them too. What do I mean by that? Well as a manager and a consultant for years I have had the honor to work with many types of salesman and let's face it some of them are just simply jerks.

The jerks do not last long, they are the ones who want to just throw keys at a customer and when they get back from the un"salesmanned" demo drive they like to ask… Continue

Putting Consumer-Centric Value at the Heart of Customer Service: Are other car companies watching the leadership role of LEXUS?

It’s not an accident that great sports teams are ‘great teams’. They are consistent in their play and standings year after year. Take for example, the New England Patriots, the New York Yankees, or even the Dallas Mavs.

It’s not an accident either that great companies are ‘great companies’. They too are consistent in their product and performance year after year. In this case, let’s look at Apple, PepsiCo, or Starbucks.

These companies, teams and brands are always looking for…

Are you a dog in a cat world?

dog and a cat were recently having a conversation about how each other looks at the world.

They had been friends a long time and the dog had recently been promoted to the title of Service Manager of his Dealership. The cat had stopped by for a visit and to congratulate her friend on his recent promotion. And, as Managers are prone to do, they began to discuss how each run…

Study: Dealers must woo young service customers

Service customers at auto dealerships are intensely loyal -- but are older and spend less than customers of independent shops and chains, according to a recent survey.

So dealers must win converts with online promotions and prepaid programs, said Mike Martinez, chief marketer at DMEautomotive, the marketing firm that commissioned the survey.

Dealer loyalists, defined as those who spend the bulk of their service dollars at the dealership, are more than twice as likely to be 55…

Lead Bid Attempts to Switch Up 3rd Party Leads

Last week a call came in from Lead Bid, Inc. after being re-directed to me from one of my dealer clients.  The sales professional on the other end of the line attempted to sell their service for providing third party leads  The offer was similar to the famous travel website, www.priceline.com.  You name your own price for third party leads.

On the call, we walked through their website to educate me on how easy it is to adjust the price per…

"Make it Count" ... A Look Back at Notes from a 1997 Managers Meeting

Over the weekend, I was sifting through boxes and boxes of dealership "stuff" in preparation for my presentation at the Automotive Super Conference in June.  I came across notes from a "Kick-off" Department Head Meeting I conducted in 1997, in the spirit of Jack Dawson's famous speech in the movie Titanic.  I thought this was pretty remarkable as the remake is soon to be released in 3-D.  I scanned over my notes and chuckled..."Some things are still so relevant…

The Digital Dealer pt. 1 – “First Things First”

The “Holy Grail” of automotive retail should be to grow beyond the “Internet Department” or “BDC” and become what we’ll call here a “Digital Dealership”. Our industry has been implementing these departments since the late nineties and still is up to now. These departments evolved out of necessity to capture a consumers interests via the internet in a more…
